Who can open an account
The bank has a dedicated page and an English-language application form for non-residents, so foreign individuals can open an account too. According to the bank, some of the products described on that page are available only to citizens of certain countries.
A company registered in Georgia can open an account online if its representative already has a personal account with the bank; otherwise, the bank suggests visiting a branch. Terms for companies registered abroad are not stated on the official website.
How to open an account
You fill in an online application (a KYC questionnaire) in English on the bank’s website: you register with your email, answer the questions and upload your documents. According to the form, the bank emails you its decision within 5 business days. Once you are approved, you may need to visit a service center within 30 days; the bank will let you know about this in advance.
According to the bank’s blog, fully remote registration in the mobile app (a photo of your ID document plus face verification) is available only to adult Georgian citizens. You can book a branch appointment on the bank’s website, and the BOG App can be switched to English.
Documents you will need
For the online application, the bank asks for:
- A copy of your international passport (the application is not reviewed without it)
- A copy of the photo in your passport
- A copy of your signature
- At the bank’s request, documents confirming your source of income and your activity: for example, an employment contract, a certificate from your school or university, a business registry extract or a CV
In the questionnaire, you also state your address, citizenship, expected turnover and income, the purpose of the account and the source of funds. US citizens and US tax residents need a W-9 form.
Fees and charges
According to the bank, you may be charged a 50 GEL application review fee; if this fee applies to you, the bank will let you know. On the banking packages page, which shows prices for non-residents, a package costs 5 to 20 GEL a month, and a multi-currency account without a package costs 1 GEL a month.
Opening a company account online is free, as is the business package for the first 6 months (for an already registered business whose representative is a client of the bank). The full terms and fees are on the bank’s terms of service and fees page.
Things to keep in mind
Citizens of Russia and Belarus can open their first account only through the online questionnaire, not through a power of attorney. They need a document confirming their activity and a bank statement for the last 6 months in English (or another document confirming their income). If the application is declined, the review fee is not refunded.
Under the bank’s rules, a personal account may not be used for business activity, transit transfers or high-risk cryptocurrency transactions. The bank may end the relationship without giving a reason.
